and other sites of interest

Ever wondered what is beyond the finish line of a marathon?  Never done a marathon, but enjoy long days out on trails?  Welcome to “Trail Guides”, NTTR’s new program designed to offer support in the form of talks, group training runs, and support and guidance from its (older) and experienced members to help you make those first steps towards the unknown. Your goal may be a 50 miler, a 100 miler, or a specific summer destination race.  Or it may be just to find some new trails and friends to share your long runs with.

You are looking at the perfect time, as we are coming into ‘Texas racing season’ with a plethora of races of all distances, many 50Ks and several really good--and achievable for the first timer--50 milers in the spring to choose as your main goal. December in Texas is Sunmart, down in Huntsville State Park, north of Houston.  This is one of the largest ultras in the country with a fast and ‘easy’ course.  After Christmas there is Bandera, which is a tough course in the Hill Country offering 25k, 50k, and 100k options. February has more options. Close to home is the East Texas Ultra Runners 50k at Tyler State Park, or you could head back down to Huntsville for some crewing and pacing duties at the Rocky Raccoon 100-miler--sure to be an interesting and enlightening weekend! Or you can head further afield to other races listed on our calendar. All these lead nicely into March and the Grasslands 50-miler, held just outside Decatur and hosted by NTTR.  This is a great first 50.  The course is a gently undulating clover leaf format, so there is lots of new and interesting ground to cover with very little repeated, and the support is fantastic. As it is so close to home, you get to head out and train on some of the loops, adding to your confidence.

Take a look at the links listed on the right side of the page, and be sure to check out the calendar, as our “Trail Guides” events are a great place to meet trail runners and have a great time while participating in what just may be your favorite new pastime.
